Where's GNOME desktop?
I just finished a complete install of Slackware 10.2 and selected the Xinit for GNOME from the installer. But to my surprise, it seems to be using the KDE "kdm" login manager and I can't find a GNOME session anywhere.
Did this somehow get removed from the distro? I remember there was talk of this, but that it was put back in before 10.2.
Thanks ... sorry if this is a no brainer.

Gnome has not been part of Slackware for a couple versions. I recommend trying Dropline or FreeRock Gnome

Greetings
Gnome was removed since 10.2, there are still some projects out there supporting Gnome desktop on Slackware, Dropline Gnome and Freerock Gnome just to mention.
Excuse that I can't point you any further as I'm not a Gnome user and my knowledge in the matter is quite handicapped
*edit*

Freerock is a no-brainer, the instructions at the site work very well indeed. It takes a bit of time to download, install everything, but, I had no issues at all with it.

Why did they do that!?!?!
It was in 10.1 ... ugh. GNOME is one of the best desktops IMHO. Quick, lightweight. I've been using Slackware since kernel 0.99 and now for the first time must consider switching as I like the students in my lab to use GNOME desktop as well as all the libraries. I'm assuming Slackware somehow dropped all the libraries too (eg., GTK, etc...)?
This is a sad day for me.

Gnome, light? fast? It just doesn't run well on lesser machines.
Slackware didn't drop all the libraries, GTK is used in a lot more than just Gnome.

Yeah, KDE is much more configurable then GNOME, infact you can make it look just like GNOME if you want. Slackware also comes with some real lightweight desktop managers if you really need the extra performance. All gtk apps work just fine in Slackware under the KDE desktop. I don't know if I could say the same for QT apps in Gnome.

<- aww I thought that was a "barf" icon.
I guess "more configurable" means being able to make a fish bounce backwards on top of your cursor.

lol, although that is a nice feature, I was referring more to the back end stuff. You can do some pretty amazing stuff if you know how to create advanced themes. It's not just colors and title bars. You can completly change the way KDE looks and acts. Oh yea, and QT rocks the house when it comes to GUI development. I think it's better then Microsoft's MFC. Although I've never used GNOME's development libraries so I can't say wether it's any better.

Hey sorry this is a bit off topic, but I just went to the archlinux store in your signature and was wondering if you knew where can I find a chick that's wearing one of those arclinux thongs.

You can of course build "normal" GNOME using one of their build scripts, though I have no experience of these (I do plan on trying GARNOME (or possibly building entirely from scratch) eventually though).
