So, any ideas on when Slackware 14.0 final will be released? What's the latest rumors?

Thank you

Getting close! Hopefully we've cleared out most of the remaining issues
and are nearly ready here. We'll call this release candidate 2.
Unless there's a very good rationale, versions are frozen.
Any reports of remaining bugs will be gladly taken, though

From PV, so it is close. :)

Anonymo 08-24-2012 07:56 AM

This is almost a traditional question now... :D It's part of using Slackware and if someone doesn't ask, the release might be cursed and won't be released.

Maybe you should consider the following thread as well: The previous Slackware releases.

Patience young grasshoppers. The grass that blows in the wind is not fit for standing upon.

wolf2600 08-29-2012 09:20 PM

When you're 13.37, there's no need for further revisions. ;)

josiah 08-29-2012 09:33 PM

Remember that the Slack that can be spoken is not the eternal Slack. The next version has always been and shall always be; 13.37 and 14.0 are merely pebbles along the bank of the stream.

slack32 08-30-2012 12:56 AM

Soon(tm)
:D

SpelledJ 08-30-2012 01:48 PM

If you seek slackware-14, know that you are already within it.

hitest 08-30-2012 03:26 PM

Slackware is akin to a fine wine; I savor each release. I don't sweat it waiting for the next version of Slackware. It will arrive.

ReaperX7 08-30-2012 03:31 PM

Seek that which you must, know! Find it, you shall! But beware the dark side!

jjthomas 08-30-2012 04:08 PM

I predict that it will be released on September 10, the day after my vacation ends, the day I go back to work.

Interesting to know that the Slackware release cycles are related to your vacations. Makes them easier to predict. :)

sorinm 08-31-2012 03:26 AM

Slackware 14.0 will be released when Chuck Norris gives the approval stamp, it`s not related to your vacantion.

Chuck uses Slackware? I thought it was more stripped down LFS.

Regards.

If Chuck Norris wrote Linux, the kernel would always panic.

:).

Martinus2u 09-01-2012 02:50 AM

if chuck norris wrote linux, the kernel would run even when the cpu is missing.

solarfields 09-01-2012 03:33 AM

JJ

have vacations more often ;)

Soderlund 09-01-2012 09:25 AM

I think September 6, +/- 1 day.

RC1: Aug 9.
RC2: Aug 16 (7 days).
RC3: Aug 24 (8 days).
RC4: Aug 30 (6 days).

That averages out to 7 with a margin of error of 1. August 30 + 7 days = September 6.

Didier Spaier 09-01-2012 10:56 AM

Maybe we should not completely discard the possibility that an RC5 appear.

Please don't beat me. And don't call me Cassandra.

I favor simplicity over ease of use, and reliability of a release over having it available sooner. We already have -current for those than can benefit from having new features now.

I'd rather Slackware 14 be as bug free as is "reasonable". Otherwise there is no reason to wait for a "stable" release, as we could just keep using a -current snapshot that met our personal technical needs.

I favor getting it right over getting it sooner. There are advantages to speedy releases and having both a stable release (13.37) and -current available to us is the best of both arguments.

We have -current, let's not rush stable. ( Says a man who's been waiting for the next release since late winter. :( )

I'll duck now while an assortment of items are tossed at my head.

EDIT: Looks like I may have posted in the wrong thread. There's so many threads related to the new release I'm getting them mixed up.

According to Greek mythology, Apollo placed a curse on Cassandra so that no one would ever believe her predictions. She even predicted her own murder by Clytemnestra but failed to prevent it.

To know more, see http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cassandra.

Hard choice coming up. New PC due to be delivered to-morrow. I ordered it when I saw that 14 RC1 was out and I thought the final release would arrive before the PC.

So do I
  1. ignore the PC until 14 is released.
  2. install 13.37 knowing that I will replace it in a few days?
  3. use Windows for a few days?

Didier Spaier 09-03-2012 05:14 AM

4. install Slackware 13.37 and read UPGRADE.TXT when Slackware 14 will be released.

ruario 09-03-2012 07:08 AM

@arubin: You could install RC4, the final likely won't be that different.

red_fire 09-05-2012 10:44 PM

I'll ignore the pc :p

Patience is a virtue and a quality all slackers should cultivate, allowing a product to mature before enjoying it :D

It's part of the enjoyment ;)

*sry to be a bit philosophical coz to me slackware has become a way of life xD

I used Eric's script to create an rc4 usb installer and then have just updated. It really is going to be an EXCELLENT release. :D

God willing, Slackware 14.0 will be released before "SpaceBalls 2: The Search for More Money" is released in theaters.

Please tell me this is a real thing. I've been in a Mel Brooks deprived state for years, to the point that I've watched History of the World 2 times this month.

ReaperX7 09-05-2012 11:44 PM

I'm sorry... I'm laughing too hard at my desk to post anything else... :D

Edit: Finally stopped laughing.

Either that or Hardware Wars 2 goes into production.

Or simply install 13.37, which is a very fine release, and leave it at that for some time. I'm using it on my workhorse PC right now. No rush to replace anything.

jjthomas 09-06-2012 01:47 AM

4. Insert unused hard disk; install CentOs 6.3; add a repo install other applications; get missing dependency error. Pick up the pieces (see CentOS FAQ).

Open up browser with two tabs, one at the Slackware Change logs; the other at LQ. Wear out the F5 (refresh) key.

*sigh*

arubin 09-06-2012 06:32 AM

I couldn't resist it. I had to try it

It proved challenging what with EFI and GPT and I needed ruario's help.

And Slackware 14 will go on it as soon as it's available.

caduqued 09-07-2012 03:10 AM

Almost there. Last version of Upgrade.txt

Great!!!

Hmmm i thought the version numbering was gonna be 14.kernel-vers like 13.37,, so back to old numbering again? Haha

That was only a joke. There was never an intention to use kernel versions in the Slackware release number... it was pure coincidence and therefore ideal for a prank.

Eric

jaycee4 09-08-2012 12:04 AM

Personally, I was rather hoping the release after 13.37 would be nubered 14.73, given the time between the last two releases (the longest in Slackware's history), but alas...
