using only blackbox and fluxbox as window managers
and using thunar, gnomad2(creative zen explorer),opera xmms
and xlock for screensaver. id liek to know what would be a good bare minumum for libs and everything else. this laptop only has a 5 gig hd and i would like very much to optimize it(kernel compile yes, yes but last) or in short....
what can i remove, that i dont need , and what caveat's might there be . i dont need i18 or any of that and i have cut donw a lot of other stuff already i would just like to know how i can tighten the proverbial belt on this little book.
If you're not using KDE 'kde' and 'kdei', you should uninstall it, it takes up plenty of room. I usually also get rid of emacs 'e' and the FAQs 'f'. Plenty of stuff in the network directory 'n' you can remove if you don't run any server software on it. If you don't use tetex 't' you may also be able to get rid of it, and maybe some things from the 'xap' directory that you don't use. I can't really recommend too many specific apps, because you may use them, but typically the critical install directories are 'a', 'ap', 'd', 'l', and if you use xorg 'x'. But even there you can strip out some things, just be more careful, note that each one comes with a short description, and you can look for more on google.com/linux.
