what package contains libicui8n.so.56?

Howdy LQ:

My 14.1 web server had all the packages from a, ap, d, l, and n, violating most security recommendations of having only the packages needed to do its job, and nothing more.

So instead of upgrading to 14.2, I started from scratch, and only installed V.Batts' minimal list

In addition I added httpd package, but when I tried to run it, it complained about apr-util, so I added that package; the same for sqlite. Then it couldn't find libicui8n.so.56:/usr/sbin/httpd:
Code:
error while loading shared libraries: libicui18n.so.56: cannot open shared object file: No such file or directory
. Google's not turning up much: someone else who couldn't find it was told to create a bug report... but otherwise, not much.

Does anybody know which slackware package contains this dependency? Since it seemed like a C library, I installed glibc, but this wasn't it.

Hello,

Code:
$ grep -R "libicui18n" /var/log/packages
/var/log/packages/icu4c-56.1-x86_64-2:usr/lib64/libicui18n.so.56.1

... And see also the Slackware Package Browser, that gives you the information for files shipped in packages that you never installed, setting the "mode" to "content".

Awesome. I've always checked /var/log/packages to see what's been installed -- but I thought it was just a list of filenames, and never opened one up to realize it contained the tree of where it put everything, like the output when using makepkg. Wow! What an easy way to find these dependencies. Hopefully I'll never have to ask which packages contains a library ever again.

Thanks phenixia2003! You solved it.

Another variant is:
Code:
# slackpkg file-search libicui18n.so.56
The list below shows the packages that contains "libicui18n\.so\.56" file.

[ Status ] [ Repository ] [ Package ]
   installed slackware64 icu4c-56.1-x86_64-2

Just as an FYI, /var/log/packages will only contain information for packages already installed on your system. If you didn't have anything installed that contained that missing library, it wouldn't be found.

In those cases, your two best options are what Didier and bormant mentioned. Both of those methods will allow you to see what files are contained in what packages, whether or not they're installed on your system.

Also, to note, that minimal list is quite old (last modified 7 JUN 2011) and may not be accurate for today's Slackware. It may work fine, but it may not....
