What is with all the Slack directories in the mirrors?
 

Just curious as to why there are so many different slack directories when looking at the official mirror sites. I mean, i can understand keeping past versions up there but then there is also 11.0, current (what is difference between 11.0 and current??), slackware, unsupported, etc...

I'm a newbie to slack so I am sticking with the official 11.0 until the new "official" version comes out. But what is the current directory? Just curious as to what is going on with the project...

Current is the branch of Slackware that is under development and that will eventually become Slackware 12.0 (right ?). It is generally considered more bleeding-edge and less stable. The rest of the directories have READMEs that explain their contents.

I'll try current out on my desktop soon, but because it is quite unstable, I can't really risk installing it on my notebook here, I need it for work.

What do we do to "update" our system with current software? Do it ourselves? Just curious if there was some type of repository like Yum or something similiar that Slack had. I'm guessing we do it ourselves but I thought I would ask.

Obviously, I suppose we could download the stuff out of "current"...

Any idea on when Slack 12 is supposed to rear its head?

Oh, well you can do it with swaret or some other package manager, but it's usually recommended that you do it manually, and follow the UPGRADE.TXT

As for Slack 12.0 ... I would ask Pat V. or Alien Bob ... The answer will probably be "when it's ready" :D

im willing to bet that if you ask them they wont reply to you. also according to -current the next version is gonna be 11.1.1 i dont know what happened to 11.1 but what ever. but i agree with you texmex i should be 12 because it has a new toolchain and modular X and a bunch of other shit thats changed

Personally, I don't understand the version numbering of Slackware. But I guess Pat V. decides, so whatever he says goes.

i think it would be funny if he called the new version "version 5" the way i see it is that its a X.Y format. a Y incroment being a minor release change like maybe new kde and a few other things and an X change being like new tool chains, dropping the 2.4 kernel and what not. but he could always jump 3 versions again i guess.
