Lightbulb What is the best color used on console?

Hello people,

In your opinion, What is the best color used on console which suits best to allow eyes to pass long time looking at it?. What color for letters and background?.

Most of programs use by default white over black.

Regards

I like black background and white text, but that's because I'm used to that from working on console alot.
some people like white text and black background (like a text editor), some other people like weird colors like yellow background and green text... as long as the text stands out, and you don't have to strain to read it, then it's just pure ascetics.

I use the Transparent, Dark Background in Konsole. If that isn't available I like the common white text over black background. That's what I hate about XFCE's terminal (it's black over white and I couldn't find how to change it)

I've found that white text on a blue background is quite comfortable to look at for hours on end.

Supposedly, yellow-on-blue or green-on-black are supposed to be the best for your eyes (that's why old monochrome monitors used to have green-on-dark-green as it was the closest they could get with CRT at the time). However, white-on-black seems to be the best for myself (black-on-white, like a word-processor, tends to do just as well but if you were to use the same fonts on both, white-on-black actually feels nicer).

But yes, it's a very personal thing and most people just stick with white-on-black or black-on-white.

Most of the time when I'm doing CLI stuff, I use tty1 (CTL-ALT-F1), so I'm used to the default system colors (ie. black background, white filenames, blue directory names, green executables, etc). When I do use a terminal in X, I generally use transparent with dark background, or black background with green text.

the default color scheme of tty or the opposite (grey bg and black fg) so that coloured strings (as executables) don't flash my eyes on a too muck dark bg.

White text on black, with transparency.

I've used white on black for probably 85% of my life, so I really wouldn't change any time soon.

The screens were green on black because they were phosphorus! Take it from a guy who sat behind a friggin green screen for thirty years that this combo doesn't do any wonders for your eyes

I have recently started to only use the command line and I found a nice utility that colors some common commands. its called color wrapper, here is a url below...

http://freshmeat.net/projects/cw/

It really breaks up the monotony of white on black.

EDIT: It also works on aterm/eterm/whateverterm under X

I go for a very dark gray (almost black), and change the text color depending on my window manager theme at the time. I like the look of the gold / yellow-ish / orange text, it sort of reminds me of older computers.

I prefer (light) grey on black, with no transparency. White on black has too much contrast for me, and white backgroud is simply too bright.

Interestingly, this doesn't apply to other apps. I once tried using dark backround desktop plus a mostly black gtk theme, and changed the text/bg colors of Firefox to white/black. It looked pretty cool but was tiring for the eye after a short while.

Personally I like the yellow txt on dark blue background with just a little transparency, or white txt on black background with transparency also
