Is there a Hovering Lasagne Monster?
I'd have to agree with Eireannach, the sub-genius thing adds nothing to Slackware (for me) and might and evidently does put some people off. Matter of personal taste.....
It hasn't stopped me from using Slackware since the beginning, nor has the personal beliefs of members of my church, all different as they may be put me off from attending.
I think it was nice for Eireannach for sharing his opinion re what should be in Slackware and we should be thankful he let us all know and is participating in the purpose of the thread. Some of us might want systemd. It's a suggestion, let's not be judgemental about it.
The only time I give the SubGenius connection any thought is whenever anybody complains about it (although I have read/waded through "The Book of the SubGenius). I certainly would never allow it to influence my choice of using Slackware. People get hurt when satire is taken seriously. Remember Paris?
Je suis Charlie (in case ISIS or Al Quaida in Yemen is reading this).
I find Eireannach's current choice of distro ironic, considering that when Debian Wheezy came out, there was some braindead corporate pillock who stated that the name Wheezy made it completely unsuitable for enterprise use. We all have irrational preferences. It's impossible to fulfil everybody else's irrational preferences at the same time (they are ever-changing and many of them are mutually exclusive). So all we can do is put our own stuff out there just the way we like it, and tolerate diversity in the stuff that others put out there.
Here we go again. Someone taking the SubGenius thing seriously.
P.S.
Anyone else remember someone years ago objecting to the use of the word "daemon" in Linux? Can't remember if it was in this or another forum on LQ.
The drive behind removing any cultural references from IT are people, who don't want to be reminded on which giant's shoulders they stand. They take technology for granted and want nothing to do with the guys who made it possible (or their culture). This is quite arrogant and the opposite of the often preached tolerance.
BTW: Once Slackware is around long enough, it may qualify as religion itself.
I once began to maintain a SlackBuild for a software, then realized that when shutting it down is displayed a prayer. This was for me a case of conscience, as I abhor proselytizing and don't want to contribute to any, whatever the religion in question.
So I asked the author if he would accept that the prayer be removed, or at least made optional. As he refused, I just found someone kind enough to take over the maintenance of the SlackBuild. This preserved both the rights of the author to his work and his faith, and mine not to participate in any proselytism.
If I may make a parallel, anybody using Slackware should be allowed to adhere to the Church of the Subgenius, whether this be a "real" faith or not, and you not to use it if that goes against your ideas.
