Dolphin in KDE4 seems about useless, missing most of the features of konq in kde3 and takes forever to display folders with a lot of files, is there anything better?

You can use Konqueror in KDE4.

I use Dolphin when I want quickly want to grab some files from/to a USB stick or CD.

Would be interested to find an alternative though.

I have done away with file managers and have one home folder desktop with links to everything in home. Everything else is found through ls command or cat /proc/partitions.

I use thunar myself. It is fast and easy to use.

Of course, to get the icons on it use need to create the file $HOME/.gtkrc-2.0 and add the line: to the file.

Yes, you can use konqueror in kde4 but it seems to be sharing libraries with dolphin as it suffers the same issues.
I'm trying to take pictures from my phone and sort them out, every so often I'll copy the 1000 or so pictures off of my phone and sort them. Konq/dolphin just can't handle more than a few files.
So I hit file/new folder and wait and finally it creates it then it scrolls up to where it is so I have to slowly scroll back down to the group of pictures I found and wanted to separate out.

I use XFCE and am used to Thunar, it is fast and does all what I want.

Shouldn't be necessary on a standard Slackware installation.

It's not necessary on XFCE but you need to have the file if your WM is fluxbox. Don't know about KDE.

I'd have to agree that Thunar is the best for that sort of thing out of the file managers that come with Slackware.

However, if you're talking thousands of files I'd just about always be using bash for that ... You're not really talking about anything intense, just some 'mv' or 'cp' action.

Well, I'm sorting pictures. Previewing thumbnails on the right pane to see what they look like then creating folders in the left and dragging a few at a time into the proper folder for whatever event I took the picture for. dolphin I create the folder then it falls in its place but its the current selected so I have to scroll back down to where I was then select a few pictures and move them into that folder. Of course each of those steps takes a loooong time. Then I try to select a few and it scrolls up 20 or so selecting multiple so I have to go back and try again. Then the left pane with the folder list moves around all on its own.

Can't go wrong with a classic. Midnight Commander FTW.

I can't say that I'm aware of any issues, large or small. I like the tabs....

I use Xfce and Thunar does ok by me. It's fairly easy to add custom actions.

I use Konquerer to browse SAMBA/SMB shares, as its faster and more stable than Dolphin. I dont have many of those left: the big one is my WNDR3700 WIFI router. The WNDR3700 has USB2.0 for an external drive but only has SAMBA not NFS (one day I'll fix that).

To sort, view, etc., photos, I use Gwenview and sometimes Geegie.

Although, my all time favorite is still Midnight Commander. 'nuff said.
