What do Slack Builds do?
 

So I'm curious about something, mostly because I tried to install something and the only way that worked for me was using a slack build. Then thinking back to other things I've installed, they have all been slack builds, I have never successfully installed something from source on Slackware (and I am a little bit of a newbie, so it may be something stupid)

Well the package in case is ndesk-dbus and ndesk-dbus-glib. The latter obviously depends on the former, so I downloaded the former from ndesk.org (specifically, ndesk-dbus-0.6.0) and ran the ./configure script, make, and then sudo make install. It looked pretty successful (I mean I scanned carefully for "error" but didn't find anything) Well then I tried to install ndesk-dbus-glib the same way, but it said ndesk-dbus was missing. Finally I found a package at pkgs.org, however this package was 0.6.1a. To keep a story short, it worked but I don't think the minor version difference could have made the difference.

Anyways, what is it that the package does that I was missing while trying to install it? I feel like something is happening that I am unaware of, and going through a couple SlackBuild scripts, it isn't apparent to me.

I believe that ndesk-dbus must have been installed to /usr/local/bin and ndesk-dbus-glib didn't look for it there.

You could have controlled this with --prefix /usr/bin during your configure.

SlackBuilds is rather easy to understand. I'll refer you to the SlackBuilds_HOWTO. Once you understand that then you can get additional information from the FAQ.

Thanks very much for the props, onebuck... and know that your suggestions amongst others made the tutorials much stronger than they otherwise would have been. I've got a new one on setting up printers using the GUI tools included in the default Slackware bundle that I expect to upload either tonight or tomorrow morning, and another on file permissions that's about half complete. I'll post it in the usual thread when they go up.
