What can I remove and how??
I just installed Slack 10 on an old notebook from work.
Toshiba Satellite 316CDT 2 GB HD 32 MB RAM I did a basic install (install everything) removing GNOME and KDE... Because neither would run anyways... After installation.. I have 60 MB free! LOL I want to know what I can remove and how to remove Slack packages... This is only a toy so I really don't need much... I know it defaulted to install Apache and Bind and all that stuff I don't need... Thanks for the help.. |
To remove software you can use pkgtool. It provides a curses based interface to manage packages. What you can delete ? That depends on what you want with the machine. If you don't want to compile you can delete a lot of development stuff and libs, if you don't want to run X you can delete X.org packages etc ...

or you can use removepkg as long as you know the keyword for it. example: removepkg fvwm, maybe you should look at pkgtool and if you are unsure, head on over to www.slackware.com/pb for a further description of it. If you STILL are unsure, just compile a list of software that you arent sure of removing and post it up here, im sure someone can help you out.

Well I DO want X... But i only want it as a play machine.. but don't I need to compile to install/update software??
I have been under the impression that everything is compiled from source under slack.. not true? If I can update the system without the recompilation tools I would be more than happy to remove them... as I think that is about 600 MB of software... The only things I really care about having on there is: Xorg FluxBox XFCE Mozilla (Netscape is also on there and I don't want it) Basic word processor (AbiWord is on there and that's fine) XMMS VNC Viewer etc... I don't need any server tools or anything like that... It's just a small project toy... Thanks for the fast response!! P.S. - This is my first time ever using Slack... but it seems pretty cool.. and If I can figure it out well enough, maybe I'll stick it on my good notebook.. (HP Pavillion ze5270) |
Try reading AmigoLinux.org documentation that's basically a stripped version of Slackware and they have written about the necessary packages to run Slackware (30 mb of pkgs...) and then you can add what you need to that base.
