I ran xrdp and connected locally with rdesktop, it just froze when I connected and selected Xorg (or most of the other options), so that part isn't working in isolation.
Thanks allend, but I think I'll give it a miss. I still don't understand what this will give me over vncviewer + Xvnc, but it seems more complicated to configure. Think I will live with the limitations of Xvnc/vncserver.
Instead of NX, one could try x2go - it's open source, and SlackBuild is available for both client and server at SBo.
Indeed it is, however it seems that's going to be less than straightforward too:
bash-4.4# ./rc.x2goserver start
Can't locate Config/Simple.pm in @INC (you may need to install the Config::Simple module) (@INC contains: /usr/lib/x2go /usr/local/lib64/perl5 /usr/local/share/perl5 /usr/lib64/perl5/vendor_perl /usr/share/perl5/vendor_perl /usr/lib64/perl5 /usr/share/perl5) at /usr/share/perl5/vendor_perl/x2gologlevel.pm line 26.
BEGIN failed--compilation aborted at /usr/share/perl5/vendor_perl/x2gologlevel.pm line 26.
Compilation failed in require at /usr/sbin/x2gocleansessions line 31.
BEGIN failed--compilation aborted at /usr/sbin/x2gocleansessions line 31.
Ooops. Scratch the above. slpkg has failed me for just about the first time. It didn't get the dependencies which are documented in the slackbuild.
I installed the dependencies, followed the instructions for creating user accounts: https://slackbuilds.org/repository/1...rch=x2goserver
NB: the instructions are wrong, and seem to miss off a 'cd /var/spool' before the chown.
I then get to run the server and connect with the client. Connecting to another user on localhost from the client just results in a hang with the GUI saying Status: connecting.
It seems there are a bunch of x2gostartagent processes churning away (goes from 5-7) but going nowhere.
That NX is made by an Italian State backed company and they use squadrons of heavy programmers for fighting for this features.
What's about that Italian State thing?
The Italy still has the Maecenas thing, aka supporting what they consider worth things/research just for the Art/Greater Good, like was since the Renascences epoch.
According to the Wikipedia page for CERN, Italy is in the #4 spot for amount paid at 118.9 CHF (Swiss Franc) for 10.6% of the total amount. (Germany is the #1 at 20.4% followed by the UK and France at 15% and 14.3% respectively.) And Italy is #14 in contribution per capita at 2.1 CHF.
And, so, Gentlemen, a guy from Newport News, VA, USA, knows better what happens in Europe than a European...
You conveniently forget that we talk about the European Union, and trust me, as an European (citizen), the European Union is built on the shoulders of those states: Italy, France, Germany and UK.
Forget about the last, because she's the pansy lady who has nerve crises and menace to going back to her mom if she not gain what she wants. Read: "her interest first", and usually that's business and commerce, definitively not the Abstract Science.
Germany is the guy who do not move a finger if he has no gain. His standard question is: "What I will gain if I do that?" Combining: Germany and Abstract Science is like talking about a possible Earth's conflict with the Klingon Empire. Could happen... in movies.
France is the Bohem Uncle, who love Art and Science, who has money, he even give money, if you catch him in the proper moment to ask for money. But no one can rely in him to do a certain thing in a certain moment.
Remains the Italy. They like the Culture, they pay for Art and Science, they try to contribute to the Greater Good. Some projects are small (i.e. NX), other are bigger, like Docebo, other are even bigger, i.e. LHC.
I for one, as an European citizen, who lived in all those countries, I strongly believe that behind LHC could not be others than the Italians, but if the Americans known better what happens in the European Union, as to be...
PS as a question: you know which state give to every of his young major citizens 500EURto buy books?
Answer: Italy, at 18 birthday to any Italian citizen, and alternatively those money could be used for paying one of the State recognized Courses. Read: EDUCATION

I was just surprised at your statement. I wasn't trying to disprove it. But I was curious how much more Italy had spent compared to other countries... especially since I knew that Germany has the largest GDP in Europe. After looking at the CERN page on wikipedia, Italy typically has the 4th or 5th largest GDP in Europe, trading back and forth with Russia depending on the year. My research is what led me to find it was #4 in contributions, at least according to CERN reportings.
Where I live has nothing to do with being able to research a topic. And full disclosure, I lived in Germany for 5 years (2007 - 2012) and traveled all around Europe while I was there (although, I don't think it applies to this, but I didn't think me living in Newport News would have any bearing on the subject either). Beautiful area and I can't wait to go back and visit. Unfortunately, I never got to Romania...
@Others, sorry for dragging this further off-topic. I'll step away now since I don't do X with any of my headless installs (console only), so I don't have anything to contribute.

Darth, you have no idea, and I don't even want to spend my time telling you how much you're wrong, but please don't give false informations to people.

Headquartered in Luxembourg with offices in Germany and USA. OK, I will just have to take that on trust!
I tried the latest version 6.0.66. Initially it was a dead loss but things went much better after I found this page. Strange. Even though they listed a huge number of other supported linux distros/versions on the download page, Slackware isn't mentioned and yet they have a Slackware-specific install profile. Go figure.
I've contacted the SBO package maintainer for NX but he has no interest in updating the slack build to v6 as it's closed source. So Darth, do we have a volunteer in you, because you're obviously a big fan? :-)

The Italians! Always modest!
Meanwhile, maybe you are kind to translate in English the following phrase, for example...
Quote:
I giovani che compiono 18 anni nel 2017 possono usufruire di più ambia possibilità di scelta di come utilizzare il Bonus cultura di € 500, la Carta elettronica spendibile per finalità culturali, eventi e spettacoli ...
The young people who are 18 years old in 2017 can take advantage of more amusing possibilities of choosing how to use the Culture Bonus of 500 EUR, the electronic card that can be used for cultural purposes, events and shows ...
Italy! That's Italy, and no, I do not talk about Romania, where the State think always that the teachers are payed too much, as usual...
