I would store all of your data in the /home partition. In something like /home/Data. The reason for this is when you upgrade your system, the home partition is left intact (As long as /home is an actual partition and not part of /). If you have 15GB to work with for your Linux install, I would give 10GB to /home, 1GB for /swap (Amount of memory * 2) and use the remaining space for /. I hope this helps.

For a simple desktop system you don't need separate partitions for /var and /boot. If you want to know what the different directories are used for then `man hier`

data partitions

When I was dual booting, I had a seperate partition, formatted vfat, mounted under /mnt by fstab, so I could share data between the two OSes. When I erased WinXP, I reformatted my data partition to ext3, but kept it seperate, that makes it easier when the wife takes over the machine. Also, having all the data in one place makes it much simpler to back up.
Regards,
Bill
