weird sound problems

I'm running Slackware 11.0 with the 2.6.17.13 kernel and I'm having a weird sound problem.

Last Tuesday we were in a blizzard, everything was working fine, I was listening to music in XMMS and then we had a power failure. Once power was restored, I no longer have sound? I run lspci and it shows my sound card
Code:

root@slackbox:/home/nathan# lspci | grep -i audio
00:05.0 Multimedia audio controller: Ensoniq ES1370 [AudioPCI]
00:14.5 Multimedia audio controller: VIA Technologies, Inc. VT82C686 AC97 Audio Controller (rev 20)

but when I run alsaconf it tells me there are no sound cards. When I login I get the "beep" and I get the "beep" in the terminal, when I'm logged in as root, but not as my user.

I have everything unmuted in alsamixer. I've done alsactl store, still nothing from XMMS

I found out just a few minutes ago that, if there's two mplayers running, one will have no sounds, one will have sound but when the song ends and goes to the next, I get a "[JACK] cannot open server" error, I hit OK, and the next song starts playing.

I don't even know where to start with this one...

Hmm...
I'm going to jump through all of the hoops, in hopes one of them will help. I understand most of these seem strange.

Alright - have you checked your XMMS output plugin? Change it to alsa, if it isn't there already.

Have you checked what audio plugin mplayer is using? Dunno how or if you can change it, but change to alsa if you can.

Have you disabled arts / esd / Jack? If you want to use JACK, don't kill it, but I would suggest just using alsa for now.

If you have another cheap card around, try that one instead of the current one. Does it help?

Is your user in the 'audio' group?

Hope one of these helps. (I doubt it though) Reply either way please, I'd like to help more if I can.
