Weird KDE behaviour
Hey all,
Something has happened with my KDE which I will try my best to explain... First off when I boot using startx, the desktop hangs on the boot loading screen until I click on the bottom left button. The most troublesome problem is I can not shutdown from the KDE interface, I try pressing the Shut Down button but it does nothing so I need to log into root through bash and shutdown -h to shut the computer down.
So I am thinking if it is possible to try and repair the KDE? I have no idea if this will work, I am just a noob trying to solve a problem.
Thanks.

Make another user, compare settings.
Or
From root account.
Backup your user .kde dictory, rename to for example kdebackup.
Log in as normal
Then all settings should be in default state. Like a first start.

Edit /etc/inittab (as root of course) and switch from initdefault 3 to 4. Then you will be able to shutdown from within KDE. KDE startup freezing means your video card does not support the functionalites. IIRC, this has been adressed in the CHANGES_AND_HINTS.TXT. Try to define a "KDE Failsafe" session in KDM.
Hope this helps.

Thanks for the replies hegobald and kikinovak.
I'll try both these methods when I get home and report back my results.

I believe your problem is that you are not logging into KDE via KDM, and therefore do not have access to the Shutdown feature of KDE.
If you do what kikinovak says to do (edit /etc/inittab setting initdefault 3 to 4) then when you boot you will get a login prompt to the KDE desktop. Login. From there, you can shutdown as expected as a normal user, provided that user is in the correct group (and you probably are, since Slackware prompts you to add yourself to those groups when you run useradd).

Make sure that user is in power group.
