weird hard drive activity

every night my linux box's hard drive starts doing something at about 3-4am ... the activity light turns on and the HDD makes noise likes it's searching or something and lasts about 5-10 minutes ... does anyone have any ideas as to what it is doing?

I believe that's the daily cron job running.
It's fine.

it could be running the SMART tests (smartctl) on the hard drive.

auditek is right, slackware has its daily cron jobs to start around that time I believe. By default it is just updating the slocate database and running ldconfig. Look inside any scripts in /etc/cron.daily/ to see whats going on.

Mine kicks off doing the 'updatedb' at 4:40 AM. Thats when I know I REALLY should go to bed! Helps me keep track of time :-)
