Weird: eth0 no longer recognized after upgrade & ASUS mobo replace in -current
This is weird, and I don't know how to solve the situation.
My office has a box which is, by necessity, dual-boot WinXP/Slack. The Slackware I'm running there is -current, all great and fine. Until now...
It turned out that my mobo, an ASUS P5KPL-CM, died after a power surge. Since the XP needs software activation, we replaced it for an exact copy of the mobo. After the change the box worked fine in XP, and I was able to connect to the network via the Ethernet interface.
BTW, the Slackware version is Slackware-current, updated as of the Jan 9 update (after that I was no longer able to connect to the Net with Slack).
However, in Slackware there was a problem: eth0 was no longer recognized. Using /sbin/ifconfig only listed the lo (loopback) interface. The lspci output is:

Try "ifconfig -a". A good chance that you will see an inactive eth1 interface listed there.
The reason: you have a new card in your box, with a new MAC address. Slackware's UDEV keeps the eth0 name reserved for the interface with the old MAC address and will assign eth1 to the new card.
If you want your new card to be called eth0, you just need to delete the file "/etc/udev/rules.d/70-persistent-net.rules" and reboot the compputer. That file will automatically be re-created.

@AlienBob: your advice worked wonders. I'm answering from my Slack box now. Thanks!
@zordrak: Indeed, this is a great reference and it is exactly what happened to me. Thanks again!
