Webcam help...

Hi all, im very new to Linux...I run Slackware 9 ....

I have a webcam that I would really like to use, it works fine under Windows (when I had it) - but i wana stick with Linux, yet I need my webcam to work.

I asked for some support at unix.com - and there wasnt much help

My webcam name is: SmartCam 2.1 model n.o: M6215

As i said im new to Linux..and I wud REALLY like any help possible please! I dont know what I need 2 download, Ive looked forever on freshmeat.net and google.com/linux but nothing I have found is helpful.

Questions:
What do I need to get it working?
How would I go about installing them?
Do I need any extra's?

Thanks alot for your time guys! I await your replys!

Hi mo0ness,

I have a Dexxa webcam, which I doubt is the same model as yours but I can offer you some encouragement. I simply found the driver for my camera, compiled it, then loaded the module. This was a USB webcam, and so hotplug did the rest. You can then use Gnome Meeting to contact others and people with Net Meeting. If you can find if you cam is supported, you should be able to get it working.

Good luck,

munkeh

If you can load the module up, you're halfway there. It should be availible in Slack 9...

munkeh@jupiter:~$ slocate cpia_usb
/usr/src/linux-2.4.20/drivers/media/video/cpia_usb.c
/lib/modules/2.4.20/kernel/drivers/media/video/cpia_usb.o.gz
munkeh@jupiter:~$

They are already on the default Slackware 9 Install. The link I posted told you that the SmartCam need this module. To load the modules,

modprobe cpia_usb

Good luck,

munkeh
