Waiting for printer to become available

Hi all,

Just FYI, I had a problem come up with a printer. It's a Brother MFC connected via USB. It worked fine for a long time but suddenly a couple of weeks ago it stopped working. Also xsane failed to find it. It showed up in lsusb, and I could delete and reinstall it with the CUPS browser interface. But whenever I printed a test page it would say "Waiting for printer to become available." Tried a bunch of things but what solved it was creating a udev rule.

I created a file /etc/udev/rules.d/10-usbprinter.rules with

ATTR{idvendor}=="04f9", ATTR{idProduct}=="0180", MODE:="0660", GROUP:="lp", ENV{libsane_matched}:="yes"

(obviously you'd need to use your own vendor and product id as reported by lsusb) then reloaded the rules with:

udevadm control -R

restarted CUPS and everything worked fine.

Just wanted to document it here in case someone else has the same problem. I searched the forum and didn't see anything like it.

Cheers

I had an issue with my Brother printer as well, but this one was a network connection.

Essentially when adding a printer it would find it, showing it as a URI address I recall, allow you to click next, select a generic driver.. but then it would say the printer cannot be contacted. Replacing the URI address with my printer's IP address resolved it.. strange. I set the printer's IP with mac address reservation on my router so it should stick. *shrugs*.
