Wacom works as mouse but not as pen

I am having trouble getting my wacom tablet to work with GIMP.

I have copied the wacom.c file from linuxwacom to the kernel source and compiled new modules.
I have the entries in xorg.conf

The program wacdump identifies pen and eraser and detects pressure.

But Gimp, which is the program that maaters says that there are no extended input devices.

Well I did get it working but the way that I did does not make any sense to me.

I backed up xorg.conf then deleted all the references to the tablet in xorg.conf

Restarted X and there were still no extended devices in Gimp.

Then I restored the old xorg.conf, restarted X and Gimp was showing the extended devices. Pressure was working and pen and eraser were recognised.

I do not understand why this should have made a difference.
