Hey guys, I'm new to the forums here and hoping you guys can provide me some direction. Quick introduction here, I've had interest in Slackware since I picked up a book about it in 1996, I installed it numerous times, but haven't done much with it. I've played with a few of the other distros out there and recently reloaded my SuSe box with Windows 7 (for a game of course!). Anyhow, I figured where else to learn as much as I can about Linux, than with Slackware right? I might have, however, bit off more than I can chew and I guess we'll see. I'm a help desk tech at Notre Dame, so I've got a general knowledge of how systems work, but I'm pretty limited with actually understanding network routing and all that jazz.
Goal: Stand up a Slackware server at home to replace the routing/DHCP of my current wireless router. Then hopefully figure out a way to setup a VPN on it as well (I've got absolutely no clue there), to gain access to my network (securely) at home, while away.
So lets start with how to setup DHCP on it. Can you guys give me some direction? A tutorial specific to Slackware would be awesome, if you know of a link. Once I get that working, I'll go on to the next question =)
As part of an article on how to setup a PXE boot server, I explained how to configure your own DHCP server on a Slackware box. It may be a good starting point for you:
Well I was able to get Slackware 13.37 64-bit installed on my "server" at home. Added a second hard drive, repartitioned/formated/mounted the drive and it worked! That little success made me giddy on the inside. Then I added a USB 10/100 NIC since I couldn't find one laying around to install. Configured dhcpd.conf for both NICs, one static and one dhcp. What is strange, is that the one that is dhcp (currently connected to my wireless router) won't ping fqdns or IPs, but my static one will. It was at about that time that I had to hung up my hat for the day and spend some time with the Fiance. This is all very interesting!
