VPN connection through NetworkManager has stopped working

Until recently (I don't know when it stopped) I was able to connect to a VPN through NetworkManager. I have the following packages installed for that.

NetworkManager-1.10.2-x86_64-1
NetworkManager-openvpn-1.2.8-x86_64-1alien

At present, when I try to connect I get a message from NetworkManager that says, "A timeout occurred while starting the service providing the VPN connection."

The lines in /var/log/messages corresponding to the attempt are provided next.

Code:
Jan 10 08:16:38 sigma NetworkManager[1077]: <info> [1515590198.7540] audit: op="connection-activate" uuid="0111d805-f8e2-4e03-a8fa-5fd88530344b" name="VPN" pid=7559 uid=1000 result="success"
Jan 10 08:16:38 sigma NetworkManager[1077]: <info> [1515590198.7597] vpn-connection[0x16a0640,0111d805-f8e2-4e03-a8fa-5fd88530344b,"VPN",0]: Started the VPN service, PID 8638
In /var/log/syslog I find the following.

Code:
Jan 10 08:16:43 sigma NetworkManager[1077]: <warn> [1515590203.9542] vpn-connection[0x16a0640,0111d805-f8e2-4e03-a8fa-5fd88530344b,"VPN",0]: Timed out waiting for the service to start
I suspect something changed during some patch I did but since I don't know when it stopped working I don't know which patch it could be.

The first thing I looked for was whether tun appeared in lsmod (since I recall the VPN uses tun). It wasn't so I did a modprobe tun which stared tun but the VPN connection still did not work.

Should I try reinstalling NetworkManager-openvpn-1.2.8-x86_64-1alien or are there some other things I might look at first.

Hi, maybe you need to recompile the NetworkManager-openvpn plugin, it has version 1.2.10 on SlackBuilds.org: http://slackbuilds.org..
..NetworkManager-openvpn/
but more recent versions (1.8) are available

HTH,

rob

HTH,

Thanks. I guess my thinking to reinstall the package was along the right track. I decided to use the newer version from SlackBuilds to upgrade my old version. The VPN works again.
