vnc window size problem

Hi,

I'm using x11vnc on the server and tigervnc as the client with ssh tunneling. Everything worked easily. (Both systems are Slack64 13.37, with alien's tigervnc and x11vnc built from slackbuilds.org).

However, I have one problem, which is that the vncviewer window is just a little too small for the image. I can play with different resolutions (using the -geometry option) and can make the vertical view fit, but no matter what I try I can't make the horizontal scroll bar go entirely away. What's more, when using a smaller resolution I can resize my window vertically if necessary, but I cannot resize the window horizontally beyond a certain point which happens to be just a little too small to fit the entire image.

Does anyone know how I can fix this?

Thanks in advance,

Brian

As far as I remember I had trouble with this while using x11vnc at the server end. I could be wrong but I think it has to do with x11vnc attaching to a real, physical display. I don't know about TigerVNC but I do know that TightVNC creates a virtual X11 session instead. I never had problems with TightVNC as server and client. Make sure to remove existing vncserver binaries, vncpasswd files, etc. first, if you decide to install it.

Thanks for the answer. My goal is to get into an existing X session, so I'm using x11vnc on the server side and I'm only using the viewer from tigervnc on the client side. I guess I could try some alternative viewers.

TigerVNC has x0vncserver, which gives you access to an existing X session.

Thanks, but I'm having trouble getting x0vncserver working, while x11vnc was really easy. x0vncserver gives me a "Unable to open display """, and this problem doesn't seem to occur often according to google.

I think you need to specify a display. I use

Code:
x0vncserver -display=:0 -PasswordFile=$HOME/.vnc/passwd
to set up access to my desktop.

Ok, that's a big help. I got the server working, but...one more question if you don't mind. With x11vnc the geometry option resizes the displayed screen to the specified size. In tigervnc it seems to make the viewer display only a portion of the actual screen. Is there any way to resize the screen? (The geometry option in vncviewer seems to have no effect when I change it.)

If I can't resize the display then it leaves me with even more scrolling than with x11vnc.

Thanks for your help,
Brian

The geometry option in vncviewer doesn't affect physical X sessions accessed using x0vncserver, it's more for virtual X sessions started with vncviewer.

You can use xrandr I guess, it'll support resizing to whatever the remote computer's monitor supports easily, I'm clueless about advanced xrandr uses though if the supported monitor modes are still too big for your use. You'll need to restart x0vncserver after you resize with xrandr. If you don't need to resize a lot then it's probably a workable solution.
