VMware server beta 2 on vanilla 10.2 system?
Hey guys,
I've tried to install VMware server beta 2 on my essentially "stock" 10.2 system. Before starting I created init.d and rc[0-6].d subdirectories in /etc as I found mentioned in other posts here.
I got a warning that the gcc libs are at a higher level than what was used to build the kernel. (I'm using the supplied 2.4.31 kernel) Then I got a load of other messages but it seemed to trudge onwards and compile some module and do the network bits and insert a kernel module successfully only to crash out grandly at the finish. I didn't write down the message as my head was already spinning round from some other things I was working on today. When I looked further here on lq, I see mention of PAM being required.
Has anyone had any success installing this on 10.2 without jumping through all sorts of hoops? If anyone would post some notes or a guide I should think the mods would stickify it so we can all benefit.
I see that VMware has beta 3 out but I didn't know if it was worth spending another few hours downloading it. Any thoughts there?
Thanks,
Rand

I saw that thread (and alluded to it with the PAM comment) but I don't think that it really answers my questions. Did you wind up following the steps and getting it to work? Does it turn out that having different levels of gcc doesn't cause any problems?
And what of beta 2 vs. beta 3?

Workstation whines about this as well. I've never had a problem with the newly compiled vmware modules. I suppose if your the anal type and don't like messages like that, you could rebuild your 2.4.31 kernel. The message will go away then.

Without knowing what the output was, I'm not too sure what to suggest as far as that goes...

Between the .SlackBuild post that I just revived and the link to danieldk's blog site about installing/configuring PAM, I would think all the info required is available...

Might be nice but not likely.

I'm sure they have a changelog somewhere. Not sure what has changed because I only use Workstation (barely)... If your on dialup, just start your download before you go to bed...

Nah, it's fine, I just wanted to check with someone who has it working.

I couldn't tell from the post what the final word was. In the linked post, someone said, yeah, I don't wanna screw around with PAM on my production server and that was all.
I was hoping for someone to say, "I have it working on 10.2" so that I know I'm not running towards dark alleyways.

Yea, on that guys blog site he said it was insanely easy to install/configure pam for vmware.... Even gave a step by step. I don't have much need for vmware anymore else I'd mess around with it myself.
Still think it would be a good idea to configure pam to install into vmware's DESTDIR... Nothing else would be able to find it so it would just be used by vmware...

Thanks, that's a good suggestion. I'll update if I get anything working.
