VMWare 5.5.1 serial number invalid error

I've got the following problem:
After installing VMWare (according to this article cs.ucr.edu/~jbyrne/vmware.htm) on Slackware, I tried to enter a serial number, but it gave me errors "no match", "serial number invalid"
It was with VMWare 4.5.2, I thought that perhaps there was a mistake, so I went to vmware.com and got VMWare 5.5.1 for Linux with trial serial number. But unfortunately there was the same error.

What could cause this and how to fix the problem?
