Hi all,
I'm using vlc from alienbob's repo, and it recently became completely unusable, crashing with a segfault upon opening a file.
I'm not sure which of the recent updates broke it, the almost beta or the later eudev switch, though.
does anyone else experience this? any ides for a fix?
Thanks, Niv.
Have you tried recompiling it? Looking that the date of the latest build is back from August, Eric hasn't had a chance to compile a version using Slackware's new updates. He has a lot of software in his repo that he needs to recompile after updates and those relying on it will either need to compile it themselves or wait for him to pump out an update.
In the meantime, you could try smplayer from SBo. It is a simple GUI frontend for mplayer (which comes with Slackware) that is still pretty powerful. I actually prefer it over VLC.

Reason: fixed smplayer spelling

Yes, I'm starting to lean in that direction, that is, SMPlayer vs. VLC. The YouTube plugin for SMPlayer is pretty clever and I like how SMPlayer will pick up where you left off with a video.

I just like how it seems so simple, yet it is able to harness much of the power of mplayer when you start digging through the menus. To me, it just seems easier than vlc, and since mplayer is included with Slackware, it is much easier to compile your own instead of trying to compile vlc (although, Eric does a great job with his package, including statically linking all the necessary libs... his SlackBuild is an amazing thing of beauty!). Also, for those interested in mpv, smplayer is able to use mpv instead of mplayer.
Another +1 for mpv/smplayer. Unless you really need mencoder (and ffmpeg does all that stuff far better!), then mpv is much nicer than MPlayer. It plays nicely with both vdpau AND VAAPI, which is handy if you are using an Intel graphics chip.
The only thing I've found that VLC does better is its access to DTV devices for watching TV. And mpv/smplayer can even do that, though you need to invoke some other program to do the actual tuning. Mpv/smplayer is much lighter on resources if you have minimal cpu power, such as a small laptop.
Even Eric concedes that VLC is a "monster" to compile....!
Im using vlc-2.2.1-x86_64-4alien on slackware 64 current updated yesterday with no problems. When i first installed this version it garbled the sound on videos, deleting my vlc config dir (.config/vlc) fixed that tho.
Eventually I recompiled vlc from Alienbob's repo and it works with a few glitches.
On my secound Slackware box, however, there was never a problem to begin with, so I guess my system might be a little too messed up. Perhaps when the next Slackware is out will be time for a reinstall.
