VLC 2.1.0 - stuttering x264 playback

I'm running AlienBob's latest VLC 2.1.0 on Slackware 14.0 64-bit. While 2.0.8 has been working fine, 2.1.0 can't play x264-videos without stuttering where the video stops for a few seconds and then skips to the current position while audio keeps on playing. This problem isn't unique to Slackware, as I've found an identical problem description in the Arch Linux forum and bug tracker (https://bugs.archlinux.org/task/37076).

I currently don't have much time to further investigate this myself, so before I start the trial&error build cycle I'd like to ask: can anybody confirm this problem? Is it limited to a certain hardware, platform oder software version? Have you already found a bug fix?

I had that problem too and had to downgrade back to 2.0.8. I'm glad I'm not the only one. SMPlayer and KPlayer are unreliable (freezing etc.), so VLC 2.0.8 is the only thing working for me right now.

Exactly the same problem (-current 32bit /Lenovo x220). Same "solution" - downgrade to 2.0.7

If too many people are having issues with VLC 2.1 on Slackware 14 then I can revert to 2.0.8 for that release, no problem. But did you check the options for H.264 playback? Did you enable hardware-assisted (GPU) playback?

Enable/disable h264 and tweaking with its options was the first thing that i did...no result. But wait, isn't it,that i need some sandy-bridge-specific driver(in my case of i5 graphics) in order to use hardware acceleration?

I have upgraded my T400 laptop to latest slackware64-current, upgraded to VLC 2.1.0 and played a couple of H.264 encoded movies. The files were on a network share but even so, I could not see the slightest stuttering, even with 1080p movies.

This Lenovo T400 laptop has a "Intel Corporation Mobile 4 Series" graphics controller operated by the kernel's i915 driver.

I do not have vlc-2.0.8 packages in my repository anymore. Why do you want them?
You can always build it from source of course, using the vlc.SlackBuild and modifying the VERSION number in the script.

You can find aold copy of my 32-bit package in this unmaintained mirror: http://www.mmnt.net/db/0/0/www.lpi.a...e-contrib/vlc/

And Salix 14.0 has packages for vlc-2.0.4: http://slackware.org.uk/salix/x86_64/14.0/salix/xap/ and http://slackware.org.uk/salix/i486/14.0/salix/xap/ . But mind you that you will have install many tens of other packages if you decide to use the Salix package instead of mine: http://slackware.org.uk/salix/i486/1...4-i486-1dj.dep (many of the ones mentioned in the .dep file are already part of Slackware, others are not).

thanks alienbob I installed the package from ponce and it is working great! I'm doing some tests with sopcast and it seems that the problem is gone. Don't want to call it over too early but it looks promising

Any idea where I can find a 32 bit copy of vlc 2.0.x?
vlc 2.1 doesn't seem to work here, it starts up, displays the first frame then hangs, this is occurring on a new laptop with Intel HD 4000 graphics and an i5 processor. Behavior is the same when tested in a Slackware host (-current with latest updates) and a Slackware guest in Virtualbox. The 2.0.x series always worked out of the box.
