Viewing networked file contents with ftp

I have not been able to get NFS to work between my 2 networked pcs, but I have gotten ftp to work and am able to transfer files that way. I'm wondering, though, if it is possible to use ftp to view a file's contents before you transfer it to your computer?

The FTP protocol can only copy files one at a time.

However, if you point most web browsers (including Konqueror, Mozilla and Firefox) at an FTP site, they can download a file to a temporary directory and open it in a suitable editor, effectively giving you a preview file that you can then save to the local machine or download again seperately.
