Video0 timeout error after changing video driver

Slackware64-current, HD 4000 on Samsung laptop (Vintage 2013)
This is a clean disk install, conf files updated, default ACPI settings.

Just gone from xf86-video-intel to modesetting driver in xorg-server See This Thread Now, on video timeout, I can't get back into X, although the keyboard works. I can hit Alt_F2, and type a command: I tried 2
  • 'sudo pm-suspend' got me into suspend --> resuspend loop which I eventually got out of by powerring down.
  • 'sudo pkill -9 X' got me out of X, and threw up Alt_F1's console but all keyboards and mice/mouses/meese were dead. Power off again
I don't want to switch back to xf86-video-intel, because the modesetting driver has some level of 3d support, whereas I believe I have to go to a hdmi monitor to get 3d with the intel driver; I have a monitor & cable, but it's a PITA space wise.

I'll lengthen the screen timeout if I can, but I'd like a better fix if there is one.

Did you mean to type Ctrl-Alt-F2? Alt-F2 doesn't escape from X to a vtty. Usually it's just to run a command within X. Switching to a vtty might wake up the display. Configuring dpms in /etc/X11/xorg.conf.d/ might buy you some more time before the blanking, or even a fix.

About suspend I have no ideas, never use it.

I don't mean Ctrl_Alt_F2, although I'll try that next time. I meant Alt_F2, which in XFCE gives a command line. So if you type '<Alt_F2> firefox' and press return the browser should start.

Suspend is fine here; it's when I walk away and the screen times out that problems start. I've lengthened that to minimize the issue, but it's an irritation.

EDIT: I don't know if I'm allowed to specify video. Mind you, there's no fallback to xf86-video-intel, because that is gone. I'll go figuring that.
