Video problem no FPS games or alt+ctrl+backspace ability

When I launch games like Unreal Tournament or Americas Army it accepts the command but the game never appears. Also when I am in a GUI (KDE, Flux etc...) and I try to get back to the CLI by either clicking quit or alt+ctrl+backspace I get to the CLI but I can't see anything except colorful dots that move if I enter a command. It will let me type startx to get back into the GUI.

I started with the generic driver for my NVIDIA GEForce 5200 Ultra 128mb card. I have tried an old and newer driver from Nvidia.com.

I am sorry if this was asked somewhere else but I can't seem to find it anywhere.

I am using Slackware 10.2 using the bare.i kernel from the install CD.

Otherwise the install is working great.

I had the same problem with my fx5200, not being able to return to cli after gui, I think I solved it by commenting out some agettys in /etc/inittab but I'm not sure.
