Video capture with ext dvd unit from HP

Well, I've been searching through the 'net trying to find out if my external HP dvd writer works with Linux. If so, what software could I use for the task.

I'm running Slackware 10.0 with the default 2.4.2x kernel on a Dell Latitude C600 laptop. The external dvd unit is an HP DVD Movie Writer DC4000. Internally, it has an HP DVD Writer dvd420i. The enclosure has S-Video in, Standard RCA Video/Audio In, and USB in. It connects to a computer with a USB port on the back of the unit. Supposedly, I should be able to capture video from analog sources according to the Windows software it came with. However, I want to capture video using my laptop running Linux and this unit hooked up to an analog source. HP's website only has a manual for the Windows software and nothing else. I got this unit as a hand-me-down and can't wait to tinker with it.

I will keep searching the 'net, though. Oh, the DVD Writer inside the unit by itself works in Linux. I know because it was listed on this site's HCL. However, I want to keep the whole unit intact and use it the way it was meant to be used.

Thanks in advance for your feedback,
Hector
