vi not running like vi

I am used to the vi in redhat. I already removed the link to elvis, in fact removed elvis alltogether, and made an alias for vi to point to vim. It just doesn't behave like it did in redhat. Was the vi in redhat not really vi just like the vi in slack is elvis?

vi in Redhat will be different than vim in Slackware, etc. elvis was a clone but I actually prefer vi or vim myself over most other editors.
