Verizon/Nortel USB760 3G and USB_ModeSwitch

I'm happy to report that a Verizon/Nortel USB760 3G works using USB_ModeSwitch software in Slackware64 13.0 using either the SlackBuild.org package for 13.0 or building the source for Slackware64-13.1 from the "a" source directory with usb_modeswitch.SlackBuild.

The SlackBuild package is for usb-modeswitch-1.1.1 (for Slackware 13.0) where the current version is usb-modeswitch-1.1.2, included with Slackware 13.1. There are differences from usb-modeswitch-1.1.1 to usb-modeswitch-1.1.2 (...1.1.1 requires installation of additional software and fine tuning), but both work just fine as far as I can tell.

Beats the blazes out of dial-up here in the northern Michigan woods.

I'm sorry, I forgot to thank David Somero, maintainer of USB_ModeSwitch at SlackBuilds.org for letting me know that usb-modeswitch-1.1.2 is now part of the Slackware 13.1 distribution.

Hi,

Thanks for the heads up!

Curious as to the plans costs & throughput?

Yer welcome!

Verizon offer two plans, $40 for 250MB per month, $60 for... uh, a whole lot more. You have to buy the gadget for just under $75 (taxes, of course) but there's a rebate of $50, so the gadget nets at $25. Not bad.

Given where I am, in northeastern Michigan, in the woods, close to Lake Huron and just shy of halfway to the north pole, cellular service is... well, not so hot; the signal strength varies from one, two or three "bars" although putting the machine in the truck and driving a few miles up the road makes a solid 4+ bars. At home, I'll get 50K, 100K and up to just shy of 200K throughput (it varies); on the road it's buzzes along at, oh, 250K+ (so far, only been working for about 10 hours now). And, of course, KPPP and GKrellm could be lying to me.

But, whatever, it beats the socks off dial-up.

Hope this helps some.

Hi,

Thanks again!

I would eat that amount up fast. Fortunately I've got DSL out here in the country. Clear & clean at 10,200 ft from the PO.

I am curious what application you use for PPP traffic summary/statistics to check if you're within the 250 MB limit. Or perhaps you (or someone else on the forum) can recommend some application capable of monitoring PPP traffic?
