vdpau broken by -current upgrade?

Having fixed the kmail issues on my desktop, I decided to upgrade my laptop. This uses an ATI Radeon HD4000 series gfx card (r600 driver), and until now, HD Video acceleration has functioned perfectly with the open source drivers and vdpau.

Following the recent updates, I no longer have video acceleration!

Code:
~$ vdpauinfo
display: :0 screen: 0
Failed to open VDPAU backend libvdpau_r600.so: cannot open shared object file: No such file or directory
Error creating VDPAU device: 1
libvdpau_r600.so still exists and seems to be in the right place.

I've tried recompiling vdpau, which went without errors, but still gave the same error. I've tried removing vdpau altogether and re-installing it from scratch and still get the same error.

I'm NOT a programmer. Am I right in guessing that its libvdpau_r600.so complaining that it can't open something? If so, then what? And why didn't it complain when recompiled?

Any suggestions?

TIA,

--
Pete

Update: Its magic, isn't it? Every time I post a problem here, I seem to find the issue myself moments later!!!

From the Xorg.0.log:

Code:
[ 918.747] (EE) AIGLX error: dlopen of /usr/lib64/xorg/modules/dri/r600_dri.so failed (libelf.so.1: cannot open shared object file: No such file or directory)
[ 918.747] (EE) AIGLX: reverting to software rendering
[ 918.747] (EE) AIGLX error: dlopen of /usr/lib64/xorg/modules/dri/swrast_dri.so failed (libelf.so.1: cannot open shared object file: No such file or directory)
[ 918.747] (EE) GLX: could not load software renderer
[ 918.747] (II) GLX: no usable GL providers found for screen 0
Of course, the current version of libelf is 0.8.13, so AIGLX (or whatever) should be trying to open libelf.so.0 - NOT so.1, which doesn't exist!

Quick and dirty fix:
Code:
ln -s libelf.so.0.8.13 libelf.so.1
Probably not the correct way to do it, but until Pat issues a fix, its got my system working as it should again!

AHA! I didn't spot that! I did wonder where libelf had gone - its still in source, but not in l anymore!

Thanks for pointing that out! I will go and try it immediately.......

Yes! That fixed it as well. I removed libelf and replaced it with elfutils, and all now functions as it should.

Must have got confused by the change of names - it happens easily at my age! ;-)

Your post inspired me to retry vdpau with my Radeon HD 6800 - and what can I say. It's fixed! I can finally use it without hardlocking my system or weird screen garbage! :-)

Slackware is the best.
