various questions

being a linux/slack noob , there a few things bothering me that i havn't been able to find answered on google (though, a lot of others have!). Rather then make new threads for each, i'll chunk em in 1. Any help on any of appreciated, and so your time is not wasted, i'll compile then all for others to reference...

1) My microphone wont work in applicaitons (i.e. teamspeak, audacity). I can hear the output through the speakers, the volume goes up and down when i adjust it in kmix so i know its working. I'm using ALSA, output works find, just mic input that doesn't. What should i check?

arubin: Make sure you click the red light in kmixer at the bottom of the slider for it to record.

2) I have a couple of resolutions for playing games on TwinView (1280x1024,1280x1024; 800x600,NULL). Whenever im at 800,the desktop stays at 2560 (virtual desktop). Is this normal? doesn't bother me, just wanted to know though

*ed In 800x600 mode, the desktop size is still 2560x1024 (which is my two 1280x1024 desktops). Moving around this desktop is done with the mouse, which scrolls around the desktop in a sort of viewport (afaik, its called virtual desktop).

3) Is there anyway to get the 'Windows' key to open the 'start' menu? I can use 'Widnows' + R to open the run dialog.

Randux: Probably, depending on which desktop or window managers you are using. Most (all?) allow you to set key bindings

arubin: If you configure it to act as a start key then you will lose tha ability to use it in combination with another key which IMO is more useful

4) Is there ayway to default Konqueror to tree view when opening (opposed to icon view)? Checked all the menus but can't seem to find any option like this.

Woodsman:
1. Select the View menu.
2. Select View Mode.
3. Select Tree View.
4. Select the Settings menu.
5. Selct Save View Profile "filemanagement".

5) Does a Sony Cybershot (P-100) act like a usb drive? I've read many articles saying they do, but whenever i try to mount, it says not a block device.

Cheers....

Check alsamixer. The mic input level is probably on zero. If alsa is controlling the mic input to your apps then you probably just need to set the level from alsamixer.

I don't understand what you are saying.

What is the mount command you are using? Is the hotplug subsystem running?

Make sure you click the red light in kmixer at the bottom of the slider for it to record. Also make sure that you are a member of the 'audio' group

> Win key

If you configure it to act as a start key then you will lose tha ability to use it in combination with another key which IMO is more useful. AFAIK configuring the hot keys in kde only lets you use it in combination. I did come across instructions on this site for using it as a start key many moons ago.

two solved!

as for 5, the digi cam problem, im mounting it using the standard
Code:
mount /dev/sda1 /mnt/cam

when i plug it in.

It does show up in the /proc/bus/usb/devices thoough:

That is normal. The virtual desktop always remains the same size.

Hmmm, if you change the view, it should default to that view next time you start it. Is that not happening?
