One of those trackballs has a "slow-motion" button which moves the mouse half speed. You could label it "too-much-coffee-button" and activate it for the final drag & drop approach
Seriously, though, it took me weeks to get used to a trackball and work accurately with it. After that, however, I never had any problem with my "mouse-arm" again. I cannot imagine going back to a normal mouse.
