Separate /usr works fine in Slackware 12 to 13.37 without any tweaking. On 14.0 udev complains, because it tries to execute /usr/sbin/alsactl too early (before mount -a), which needs /var also. But that's not a game breaker, it's just bad-designed automatisms failing softly. (Of course, loading soundcard settings before having the filesystems checked is only gonna work by chance anyway.)

I have /usr on a separate partition.

You can either specify it as a separate partition during a clean install or you can move your existing /usr to a new partition on an existing install. I have done both.

I make no representations to its correctness, but it worked for me, but of course ymmv.

edit - I did that on 13.37 and after I accidentally (!) deleted the /usr I did a clean install of 14.
