Hi,
in your first post, you said you are using 12.0. I interpreted that to mean Slackware 12.0. But Slackware 12.0 uses gtk+2-2.10.13-i486-1. If you have installed gtk+2 binary from Slackware 12.2 to Slackware 12.0, you should not think it would work. (Slackware 12.2 has gtk+2-2.12.12-i486-1).
In your original message, you also said that you can't have any modern browser work. But firefox 2.0.0.4 is over 4.5 years old and 3.0.3 is over 3 years old. I know that firefox 8.0.1 and 3.6.24 work out of the box (downloaded from mozilla.org) in Slackware 12.0.
Anyway, I installed firefox-2.0.0.4bg-i686-1gds and firefox-3.0.3-i686-1kjz in Slackware 12.0 and they both seemed to work ok.
(I have no idea what kpackage is but I guess it uses pkgtools and so packages should be listed in /var/adm/packages, but your firefox files start with "firefox" instead of "mozilla-firefox".)
If you really have Slackware 12.0 but gtk+2 is from Slackware 12.2, I guess your problem is that your system is a random mixture of binary packages from random Slackware versions and you have very good luck that your system even boots any longer.
