/usr/lib/libgdk-x11-2.0.so.0: undefined symbol: g_once_init_enter_impl

HEY,
I'm using 12.0, and I CAN'T UPGRADE, so please no need to tell me to upgrade to the current.

I can't have any modern browser or bit torrent client to work, because od an edless number of old stuff who need to upgrade, until a dead end.

One of this is the error message (firefox and seamonkey):

/usr/lib/libgdk-x11-2.0.so.0: undefined symbol: g_once_init_enter_impl

another is(for tranmission):

libgio-2.0.so.0: cannot open shared object file: No such file or directory

and for ktorrent:

libfam.so.0: cannot open shared object file: No such file or directory

I already tryed google it, but I only find people complaining like me but no answer, or at least nothing sefull to slack.

and bittorrent dies with this:

File "/usr/lib/python2.5/hashlib.py", line 60, in __get_builtin_constructor
import _md5
ImportError: No module named _md5

Anyone knows where could I get those things before I get crazy?

BTW, I have a old notebook with abios bug that doesn't allow me to install ANY new distro. Slack 12 and deb sarge are the newest that runs here... but I not so desesperate to start using debian, yet...

Where did you get firefox? The firefox binary from mozilla.org does work on Slackware 12.0.

OK, would you tell us the filename for the firefox package? And the gtk+2 package.
Code:
cd /var/adm/packages
ls mozilla-firefox-*
ls gtk+2*

Hi,

in your first post, you said you are using 12.0. I interpreted that to mean Slackware 12.0. But Slackware 12.0 uses gtk+2-2.10.13-i486-1. If you have installed gtk+2 binary from Slackware 12.2 to Slackware 12.0, you should not think it would work. (Slackware 12.2 has gtk+2-2.12.12-i486-1).

In your original message, you also said that you can't have any modern browser work. But firefox 2.0.0.4 is over 4.5 years old and 3.0.3 is over 3 years old. I know that firefox 8.0.1 and 3.6.24 work out of the box (downloaded from mozilla.org) in Slackware 12.0.

Anyway, I installed firefox-2.0.0.4bg-i686-1gds and firefox-3.0.3-i686-1kjz in Slackware 12.0 and they both seemed to work ok.

(I have no idea what kpackage is but I guess it uses pkgtools and so packages should be listed in /var/adm/packages, but your firefox files start with "firefox" instead of "mozilla-firefox".)

If you really have Slackware 12.0 but gtk+2 is from Slackware 12.2, I guess your problem is that your system is a random mixture of binary packages from random Slackware versions and you have very good luck that your system even boots any longer.
