Thanks for all your help and suggestions guys. I think XMMS was what is was looking for after all. Almost identical to Winamp.

I got winamp 2.95 running ok except for one thing: the library will not open at all. Pity because this is the main reason I wanted winamp - for the streaming radio and TV...

See above post for streaming *.pls and *.m3u. To stream .*.wmv I use xine with the windows codecs you can get at the mplayer site.
To stream video there are a couple of options Xine, Realplayer or Mplayer (what is best depends on the format and what works for you). I use Xine for window based content (the new gxine plugins even work for CNN at this web site: CNN news that is not embeded
Realplayer for realmedia at BBC news.

Hello zborgerd,shepper
My problem with having to run alsaconf everytime is with Dropline GNOME, not with BMP itself. Hope this clarifies. Someone else here also mentioned this problem (with Dropline GNOME).
Hope this clarifies

I use all 3 of those depending on the format. The thing is that winamps library had an easily accessible list of radio and TV stations, so I guess what I'm /really/ missing is the list! Maybe theres a w/site somewhere that has the same content, or maybe its possible to directly download a m3u from winamps server? I will investigate further.

Errr... did you use to detect your card, then to configure your sound settings, then to store your setting? Afaik, I used to have this problem with dropline but I have learned it was my fault for not storing the values after setting my soundcard.
Btw, I enjoy AMAROK more than XMMS. Although, XMMS should still be the defacto for playing audio files.

Hi,
You could also try Audacious, a fork of BMP. There is brand new 1.0.0 version released on 16th April.
