Using Slack Rescue CD to go back to stock kernel

Help! I tried to recompile ACPI support into my kernel and borked things up. Now I can't boot into Linux (I have a Toshiba laptop, dual-boot WinXP and Slack9.1). Good news is I have the official Slackware 9.1 CDs, so I can use disc 2 which is a rescue CD. I have popped it in and booted off of the CD and mounted my / partition and can access it.

My question is: how do I copy the stock kernel over and edit my /etc/lilo.conf in order to get back up and running?

You can also try a new kernel compile from cd.
Did you look at your /boot directory if there are some vmlinuz avaible ?

You may success in boot by just delete your actual kernel name vmlinuz (which does not work) and (from /boot mounted directory) :

ln -s vmlinuz-ide-2.4.22 vmlinuz

Ok, I saw these instructions from another thread:

1. Boot system from CD and mount drives.
2. Go to CD, /kernels/bare.i
3. Copy those files into /boot of your hard drive. (Overwrite the ones in there currently)
4. Run LILO. If you have the HD mounted on /mnt/root, for example, you would type /mnt/root/sbin/lilo. That should update the bootloader so you can boot the new kernel.
5. Reboot system.

But they're not working for me.

What I did:

I copied the following files from /cdrom/kernels/bare.i to my hard drive's /boot directory: System.map.gz, bzImage, config

I deleted pretty much everything in my hard drive's /boot directory except these files. Is there anything else I need in /boot besides these files?

Thanks.

Ok, I'm replying to myself now! :-)

A couple more questions, I think I need something more in /boot than those three files. Do I need to create a symlink called vmlinuz to the bzImage file?
Also, the file System.map.gz appears to be a zipped file, should I unzip it?

Ok, I'm back up and running. I just had to go into /etc/lilo.conf and change

img=/boot/vmlinuz

to

img=/boot/bzImage (the bzImage I obtained from the Slack rescue CD)

I then got a pro to help me get a new kernel and compile my nVidia support back in. Thank God my laptop is back up and running!
