using pkgtool

here i go again. slackware didn't seem to come with a firewall so i d/loaded guarddog and trying to install it. the tar.gz file is in my /home directory so i cd /home and entered pkgtool selecting installation from the current directory.
i entered installpkg -m guarddog 2.0.0.tar.gz and got something about check cut --help. needless to say the pkg is not installed. what is the proper way to install pkgs in slackware?
when i have tried to install another pkg got the pkg does not end in tgz even though the pkg ended in the tgzformat. what gives?
thanks for your help

i'm afraid like a newbie i jump before before i look. the pkg had a tar.gz format instead of tgz like slack requires. i've itnstalled it alredy when i noticed the difference. thanks just the same for your prompt response.
incidentally, could you elucidate on the difference between the -m, -r and the third option, which escapes me right now, when installing a tgz pkg. the book definitions are not all that clear to me. thanks again.
