USB Printer stopped working after plugging in Flash Disk
 

Hello,

I set up my USB inkjet printer (Canon S600) using CUPS on Slackware 10.2 and it worked fine. Then I unplugged the printer and plugged my flash disk into the same USB port. It also mounted and worked fine. But when I unmounted it and plugged the printer back in, the printer didn't work anymore. Is there something I was supposed to do? What could have happened?

I think the printer is assigned at boot. You can check dmesg to see what is going on with the devices you are plugging into the usb port.

You should be able to plug the printer back in and reboot and get your printing back.

Sounds like either hotplug or udev (depending on which one you use) assigned the device differently when you plugged it back in. I don't think this should happen if you properly unmounted th USB stick, but to be safe, you can always edit your udev rules to assign a specific device based on make/model of whatever you are plugging in.

Hey, thanks for the help. Problem solved. The kernel was assigning the usb printer device correctly as soon as I plugged the cable in, but I had to go to the CUPS admin page and press "start printer". Now it works. Go figure.

So I guess the next question is, what does the "start printer" button do, and how do I make it automatically do that when I plug in the cable? Would that be a udev rule? I'm running kernel 2.6.17-beyond1.
