That should be the 2.4.31 bareacpi. Could you post your lilo.conf file here ? With the modifications you've made to it ?
I tried the different file, but that had exactly the same problem.

I'm not too bothered, I'll have a go at recompiling the kernel tomorrow night when I get home from work.

For info, my LILO config file is:-

# LILO configuration file
# generated by 'liloconfig'
#
# Start LILO global section
boot = /dev/hda
message = /boot/boot_message.txt
prompt
timeout = 1200
# Override dangerous defaults that rewrite the partition table:
change-rules
reset
# VESA framebuffer console @ 1024x768x256
vga = 773
# Normal VGA console
# vga = normal
# VESA framebuffer console @ 1024x768x64k
# vga=791
# VESA framebuffer console @ 1024x768x32k
# vga=790
# VESA framebuffer console @ 1024x768x256
# vga=773
# VESA framebuffer console @ 800x600x64k
# vga=788
# VESA framebuffer console @ 800x600x32k
# vga=787
# VESA framebuffer console @ 800x600x256
# vga=771
# VESA framebuffer console @ 640x480x64k
# vga=785
# VESA framebuffer console @ 640x480x32k
# vga=784
# VESA framebuffer console @ 640x480x256
# vga=769
# End LILO global section
# Linux bootable partition config begins
image = /boot/vmlinuz
root = /dev/hda1
label = Linux
read-only
# Linux bootable partition config ends
image = /boot/bzImage
root = /dev/hda1
label = LinuxACPI
read-only

My change highlighted in red, I basically copied the bootable partition config, with the change to LinuxACPI. That part appears in the boot loader and can be selected and it starts off ok, then gives error messages as mentioned.

Whether you can think of anything I need to do differently or not, thanks for the advice anyway.

Thanks for all the help guys. Yes, it was very apparent that I don't have usb support built into the kernel. I added those modules and am recompiling as we speak. Thanks for the help.

Anybody got any good tutorials for getting nfs working? I'm trying to get my media to stream better to this modded Xbox I'm using as a media center.

Not getting much help here in the software forum:

Ok, I've I recompiled a new kernel (2.6.17.11) and added usb support to the kernel. I didn't add them as modules, just straight in. Now my problem is cups isn't "automagically" detecting the printer in their little http://localhost:631 setup interface. How can I figure out where the printer is so that I can try to add it manually? I suppose it's in /dev.

/dev# ls | grep usb
usb
usbdev1.1
usbdev1.4
usbdev2.1
usbdev2.6

One of these perhaps? How do I get that into cups?

I think you should have compiled them as modules. I'm not sure about this, but it could be something like alsaconf - soundcard issue, if you don't have it built as modules it won't recognize it.

Ok, I got it working. Turns out that lsusb is sort of "just for show", having a device show up in there is great, but having it not show up doesn't necessarily mean that its not there.

After a little searching I found the printer at /dev/usb/lp0, I set it up for raw printing (since this is the server for the windows clients) and so far it works great.

Thanks again for all your help. This is, hands down, the best place to come for linux help. Even if your question turns out to have a "DUH!" answer.
