USB Harddrive unmounted but not ejected

I have two USB hard drives. Both are formated with ext 3.

I normally unmount them from the icon on the KDE status bar.

With one of the drives I always get a message that the drive was unmounted but could not be ejected. With the other I never get this message.

What can the difference between them be?
