USB external hard drive too slow

hi guys,

can you please help me how to speed up my USB external hard drive? it's very slow & annoying me a lot. when i try to transfer files or watch movies on the hard drive, mplayer is skipping.
is there something i can do to improve the external drive speed?

thanks a lot!

Is it USB 1.1 or 2?

If it's a USB 1.1 interface there's nothing you
can do, you won't get past the performance of
a single-speed CD-ROM. If the computer and
the drive case have a USB 2 interface you have
probably just loaded the wrong driver.

Cheers,
Tink

On the box says USB 1.1 & 2. so i guess the hard drive is supporting both standards. i guess my notebook supports them too, but i am not sure. how can i find out this?
also, i got the USB hard drive without any CD or drivers.

thanks for the reply

Well, to find out what the notebok supports,
go to the manufacturers website and read
the specs ;) Or the manuals that came with
the machine.

Alternatively, you can do a
lspci -v
and bother the kernel developers who do
USB to tell you whether they know what
standard your chipset supports - I wouldn't
have a clue ;}
