USB Card and Drive (HDD) sometimes not detected.

I have a slackware 12 (minimal installation) running on a STB1030N machine. I use it as a samba server.

Problem:
Sometimes the USB 2.0 card and/or the USB drive (HDD) attached to it is not detected. I check this using the "lsusb" and the "fdisk -l" command. I think this problem started when I tried to attach a second USB drive to the card.

Here is the latest 'dmesg' (the card is detected but not the USB drive):

Which specific kernel are you using? It looks to me as if your USB hard drive *is* being detected since the mass-storage and scsi emulation drivers are registering.
The errors look like the ones that occur when a module is trying to be loaded that ios already compiled into the kernel. Since Slack-12 uses udev it's best that the needed features be built as modules and not hard-compiled into the kernel.

"Which specific kernel are you using?"

The /boot/vmlinuz is linked to vmlinuz-huge-smp-2.6.21.5-smp. Is this the specific kernel?

"The errors look like the ones that occur when a module is trying to be loaded that ios already compiled into the kernel. Since Slack-12 uses udev it's best that the needed features be built as modules and not hard-compiled into the kernel."

What is ios? I did not compile the kernel. I used the one from installation.

thanks,

Sorry, that was a typo. The config file for that kernel seems to show that the ohci, uhci and ehci drivers are all statically-compiled into the kernel -not as modules. The errors you are seeing are because the kernel is trying to load these faetures as modules (kobject) which are already compiled into the kernel. I think you need to change to using one of the generic kernels to fix the problem.
Don't trust fdisk -l 100% to always find the devices(/sbin/blkid is more accurate). First have a look in /dev for sd* devices (scsi hard disks -which means USB drives in your case) to see if udev is finding them and creating the device nodes. If the devices nodes are not being created in /dev, that means that udev is not finding them. udev seems to need the kernel module-loading event in order to detect these devices. Using one of the generic kernels may fix this.

I changed the kernel (generic). It seems to be working now. Thanks.

One last thing, I ran the dmesg and I still get these error messages:

How can I get rid of these?

I'll take it back. It's still having problem. It was working, then after a reboot, the USB drive is no longer detected again.

Looks to me like you need to compile a kernel for the machine. I've tried to find the config file for the generic kernel to verify whether the usb support is being compiled as modules or not (have not found them).
Did you ever have earlier versions of slackware installed on this box?

Hi,

I would suggest that you use one of the generic kernels as suggested by 'PV' via CHANGES_AND_HINTS.TXT;

Code:
excerpt from CHANGES_AND_HINTS.TXT

It is recommended that you use one of the generic kernels either
the plain kernel-generic or kernel-generic-smp) for daily use.
For most systems, you should use the generic SMP kernel if it
will run, even if your system is not SMP-capable. Some newer
hardware needs the local APIC enabled in the SMP kernel, and
theoretically there should not be a performance penalty with
using the SMP-capable kernel on a uniprocessor machine, as the
SMP kernel tests for this and makes necessary adjustments.
Furthermore, the kernel sources shipped with Slackware 12.0 are
configured for SMP usage, so you won't have to modify those to
build external out-of-tree modules (such as NVidia or ATI
proprietary drivers) if you use the SMP kernel.

If you are using one of the non-SMP kernels (huge.s or
generic.s) and need to compile third-party modules (such as the
proprietary NVidia driver), have a look in
/extra/linux-2.6.21.5-nosmp-sdk/ for information on what is
needed to build them.

As stated earlier, it is recommended that you use one of the
generic kernels rather than the huge kernels; the huge kernel is
primarily intended as an "installer" and "emergency" kernel in
case you forget to make an initrd.

However, if you do use one of the huge kernels, you will likely
encounter errors like this:
kobject_add failed for uhci_hcd with -EEXIST, don't try to
register These occur because the respective drivers are
compiled statically into the huge kernels but udev tries to load
them anyway. These errors should be safe to ignore, but if you
really don't want them to appear, you can blacklist the modules
that try to load in /etc/modprobe.d/blacklist. However, make
sure you remove them from the blacklist if you ever decide to
use the (recommended) generic kernels.
Also note the reference to the '-EEXIST', this suggestion will solve those errors. As for the USB compiled in for the generic, I checked the '/usr/src/linux-2.6.21.5/.config' and the USB support is compiled. The auxiliary is modules. That means the USB support is complied in (static). I don't keep the huge kernels or the source available other than the cd. I'm too lazy right now to go to the shop and mount the cd to check.

Another note, when you post log data lists use the vbcode '#' code tag at the top of your edit window. The quote tag for long data is harder to read. The code tag will include a scroll bar when needed.

I think I installed version 9 of slackware long time ago but didn't use it as samba server.

I already changed to generic kernel but still getting the "...EEXIST..." messages.

The USB drive is now being detected again but I have know idea how it happened. Here's what I did:
1. change to generic kernel
2. restart
3. USB not detected
4. restart again
5. USB still not detected
6. shutdown and power off the pc, and also the USB drive.
7. power on the pc
8. power on the USB drive after the boot
9. USB is now detected

The next time it fails again, I will try the same sequence and see if it will work.
