USB 2.0 jump drive in USB 1.1 slot won't work?

Ok heres the problem. My computer only supports usb 1.1 and this has never been a problem for the use of my usb key as it is also 1.1 now my friend came over with his and I was unable to mount it it kept giving me the error that it was not a valid block device. So basically my question is why is this happening and how do I fix it?

oh and jsut so you know the line in my fstab that applies ot the usb device looks like this:

/dev/sda1 /mnt/flash auto users 0 0

In theory it should work.

What is the make of the jump drive?

Look at the output ot the command dmesg. Are there any error messages relating to the jump drive?

it was awhile ago and ive restarted my computer since then so I can't tell you what the errors would be. I know he got the drive from K-Mart but I have no idea of the model.
