Upgrading to 11.0

Hi Slackware Linux community,

I am fairly new to Slackware & I am in the process of upgrading my slackware 10.2 o/s to 11.0...I am following the UPGRADE.TXT file and it says that I need the slackware packages. I've seen the 3 large ISO files but I am unsure if that is what I want to download. I just need the packages, NOT the entire distro. Are these packages (used to upgrade to 11) on a specific disc (maybe 1st disc?), or do I really have to download all three ISO files ???

-Thanks in advance for any comments/suggestions!

Hi.

Packages are available as single file downloads in many mirrors, just follow the "get slack" link in slackware homepage. But if you're planning a full upgrade to 11.0 from another version, then you're going to replace most (if not all) of the packages. In this case I would download the iso images: skipping kde (not the case of the typical workstation install, you're saving just one CD, and skipping the sources you're sparing another one.

If I'm not mistaken all of the packages groups are on Disc 1 except:

kde
t
tcl
xap

Disk 2 has those package groups plus the /extra tree.

So, if you want to use KDE and/or any real X applications you should probably get both Disc 1 & 2 iso's.

Or, you could probably just grab those packages from disc 2 that you have installed and want to upgrade, but that may be more trouble than it's worth.

Well, packages essentially "are" slackware. Btw, I forgot to mention some tools which can be used to automatically download the packages you need and install them: most of the time I personally use slackpkg (which can be found in the extra/ directory of the installation CD and here (http://slackpkg.sourceforge.net/)). Be aware that these tools are not "official" and I never used them to upgrade the entire distro. I would suggest you to use slackpkg following the suggestions of UPGRADE.TXT.

Bye,
Enrico.

Thanks for you guys support. I have no interest in KDE & its dependencies so I am probably going to end up downloading disc 1 and continuing on with the 'UPGRADE.txt' file. Thanks again =)

If you have the slackware 10.2 KDE installed it won't work after the update if you don't update KDE too. SO remove it if you don't want to update it
