upgrading slack

i am currently running slackware 9.1 and i want to upgrade to 10.1....is it as easy as downloading the iso images and then installing? And does it keep all my current configurations or do i have to reconfig my machine?

or, is there an easier way to upgrade? i had heard somewhere that swaret is good but it doesn't work for me.

TIA

for me just download 10.1 iso and do fresh install.....

yeah, a fresh install is the best way to go, IMHO...

so that basically means i will lose everything and have to reconfig my whole machine? ug, i was hoping to avoid that

just backup all the config file or just backup /etc directory.

basically this is the simplest way rather than you get frustrated by the upgrade tools

Not necessarily. You do not need to wipe out your whole harddisk when doing a "clean" install.

If you have partition /home as a separate partition. And your data files are there.

To backup /etc:
tar -cvf etc-9.1backup.tar /etc

copy etc-9.1backup.tar to somewhere safe.

You can wipe out the rest of partitions (format). But choose not to format /home partition. Or whatever data partitions.

I have tried not wiping out /home and /opt (custome compiled software, for me)

Make very sure you know what you are doing. :D

The main thing which you want to clear when doing a fresh install is /, /usr.
Again, make sure you know what you are doing. Always take the safest path when dealing with your precious data.

Or just read UPGRADE.TXT and give it a shot. 9.1>10.1 is a jump but 10>10.1 works fine and, since you've got to back up anyway and would have to reinstall anyway, taking a crack at upgrading would, at worst, just waste a few minutes in between and, at best, give you an upgraded system with minimal tweaking. Either way.
