upgrading kernel by using initrd

i'm upgrading my kernel to the 2.6.11 from the testing directory on the slackware cd. I was reading the initrd readme and was confused.
Code:

Now you'll want to run "mkinitrd".  I'm using reiserfs for my root
filesystem, and since it's an IDE system the reiserfs module will be
the only one I need to load:

  mkinitrd -c -k 2.6.11 -m reiserfs

My confusion is my hard drive is a sata drive, do i need to compile sata drive support into the initrd, for this to work? I am using reiser file sys, but i'm not sure on the sata drives if it will work or not.

thanks,

Why not take the config file from the kernel 2.6 package and compile your
kernel from source, this way no need for an initrd...

well there isn't a need that i have to do it that way, I just wanted to mess with initrd and learn about it
