Upgrading KDE 3.1 -> 3.2.1 on Slack 9.1

The FTP instructions arre removed old packages kde* packages, arts, qt, kdevelop, quanta, and koffice.
Then, install the new ones.

Okay, I just want to make sure I uninstall all old packages, so I'd like a list please.

Also, I downloaded every package from this link: ftp://ftp.kde.org/pub/kde/stable/3.2...Slackware/9.1/ I hope that's fine. I think a couple packages are dependant on one another; so, I will read up on this.

the slack 9.1 package is available at www.linuxpackages.net (u can also try swaret or slapt-get if you want the easier way of handling package updates).
of course, compiling from source tarballs is more fun.

i agree, although the www.swaret.org idea is the easier for "slackers...."
that way you can cron job it every night, and you will have ALL the slackware pkgs up-to-the-minute bleeding-edge new, if you tweek the top of the swaret.conf to look for Slackware=current.
Sort of like never having to ever go shopping for a new/improved OS. it's always new and improved.
a lazy man's dream!
luck -O.

when I upgraded to KDE 3.2.1 I also had to upgrade XFree86 to version 4.4.0 due to dependancies. So be careful of this.

Ok is there supposed to be transparent menu for 3.2.1? I used Mandrake 10 and it comes with 3.2 and the KDE menu was nothing like 3.2.1...

I removed all the kde packages and qt, then swaret --install kde -a (yes, it's set to current)

It said it installed 3.2.1, on all the packages, but then when I went into kde... it was STILL kde 3.1 interface! All my settings were still there :-\

The applications say its KDE 3.2.1... but then everything else __clearly__ says its 3.1...

Sorry to hijack your post, PhuckFonix... :-\

Maybe delete ~/.kde and ~/.kderc and try configuring your desktop again, also check that contents of /var/log/packages to see that you do have all the 3.2.1 packages installed, and none of the old ones still are. Also Mandrake uses a modified version of KDE, they add some stuff to the menu etc. Slack's KDE is exactly how it would be if you compiled it from source.

To make the kmenu transparent you have to use a style which supports it. (Most do, but some like Liquid prefer you use their own customized effects.) Then you can go to Control Center > Appearance and Themes > Style, choose a style, click the Effects tab, and set the menu effect to 'Enable translucency.' The little section at the bottom of the dialog will become enabled and will let you tweak the translucency effects.

PhuckFonix, using Swaret is a really easy and fast way to upgrade KDE, along with everything else I had a little hiccup with mine, but that seemed to be the fault of GDM.

on the transparent menu, the default install carries it. on your panel prefs gui, down by the background/bitmap click box is and "Advanced" button. click that to play with the background colors/bitmap concentration for transparency.
